Mobility Modifications

Entry Ramps

When Linda returned home after surgery, she needed to be able to access her home by a wheelchair, but only for a few weeks until her weight-bearing status changed to her lower extremity. Our staff provided solutions that would not permanently alter the home while enabling Linda complete ingress and egress of her home.

Doorway Modifications

The direction a door opens, the type of handle, and thresholds inside and outside the home can cause challenges for wheelchair and walker users. Adding lever handles to interior doors increased Ralph’s independence and reduced the workload on his wife, Sara. In addition to lever handles, we changed the door swing direction and widened the width of the doorframe to accommodate Ralph’s mobility and create less of a fall hazard.

Grab Bars and Stability Aids

Sometimes a simple grab bar can make a room much safer and easier to use on a daily basis. The style and placement of bars make a difference, and we document this thoroughly. Karen really liked that she could choose from a variety of styles. She felt more confident knowing she was going to be safer in the bathroom – especially in the shower and by her toilet.

Furniture Layout

The placement and style of furniture can ease travel and traffic patterns. Ronald learned that just re-arranging furniture and traffic flow in his condo made everyday tasks safer, easier and to complete more independently. We also drew Ronald’s attention to removing clutter, throw rugs and other potential trip hazards.

Lighting Adaptations

Karla’s low vision was making completing daily tasks challenging in the home. Sharing various low vision aides, strategies and resources to incorporate in her home allowed her to continue cooking in the kitchen, maintaining her lifestyle and saving her money.

Stairways and Stairs

Hugh and Kris were excited to move into their new forever home after relocating from Ohio. But they knew the stairs at the front entry and to the second floor would become a problem as they aged. Being able to identify stairs as a potential obstacle, they were able to install a threshold ramp at the entrance. We also added bilateral rails with non-slip treads, and motion lights to the inside stairs to aid in safety and fall prevention.
